Visual Studio 2008 Internal Web Server stopped working in Vista

I have been debugging perfectly fine using Visual Studio 2008 using visual studio internal web server, but suddenly today it stopped working (maybe due to windows update, but still not sure about the cause of this suddenly not working), On starting the debugger IE came up with a blank page saying the page could not be opened, same happened in firefox when I tried to use that for debugging, It took me sometime to realize that this was due to a vista Issue, IPv6 gets installed with Vista and cannot be un-installed or disabled easily, and that creates the problem. I followed this post to sort out my issue.

The main action that sorted this out for me was to edit the hosts file in C:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc

and change the localhost entry from

::1             localhost

to

:::1             localhost

one more Collen.

So if you are having this issue as well, do not pull your hair out but follow the post linked above or change your host file entry for localhost as explained above.

  2. I hope this post takes you less time to sort out this issue, compared to 3 hours that I had to waste to get this issue sorted out. This issue was reported back in 2007 I am amazed that it is still an issues with Vista and Visual Studio 2008.

  3. Thanks so much for your posting. I have been using MS Visual Studio 2005 and Vista for over a year and it just stopped working for no apparent reason. I already spent a couple of hours and i would have wasted days on it if I hadnt found your post.

  4. Imran, you are an angel!

    But ….. what is it that I’m doing when changing from :: to :::? The file was last edited year 2006!

    How many other things wont’n work now? What caused this strange error? Any comments from MS? Was this “feature” included in the update a few days ago?

  5. Well i just tryed the above mentioned solution to get my internal webserver to work but had no luck :o(

    So if anyone have some other sugestions to the issue they are very welcome.

  6. After I uninstalled Visual Studio and reinstalled again nothing was solved. Then I saw this post by chance and It solved my problem. Before taking action, must research a little. 🙂 Thanks a lot.
